A Bit More

Betula nigra ‘Dura-Heat’® is a fast-growing cultivar of the native River Birch. It has the same exfoliating creamy-white bark but is distinguished from the native by its smaller, glossy green leaves, dense habit and superior heat/drought tolerance. It is excellent as a specimen, shade tree, screening, and for erosion control along water features. Best in full sun to partial shade. It is adaptable to a wide range of soils, including heavy clay. Prefers moist, acidic soils. Can grow in areas of poor drainage. Water use is high to moderate. It can be drought-tolerant once established, but best growth is with regular moisture. Resistant to Bronze Birch Borer. Deer-resistant. Verticillium wilt-resistant. Decurrent habit. Cold hardy to -30°F.
