A Bit More

‘San Diego Red’ is one of the most cold-tolerant Bougainvillea available, second only to the straight species B. spectabilis for its ability to cope with the occasional freeze; it has been noted as hardy down to 20°F.  A vigorous grower, ‘San Diego Red’ will cover substantial areas with large green leaves, and lipstick-red bracts.  Be sure to plant in full sun for the best show of color.  This Bougainvillea is particularly well suited to shaping into a tree form, one only needs to stake it and prune it into a standard.  Take care when working with ‘San Diego Red’; as with most Bougainvillea, the thorns are sharp and substantial.  Puncture proof gloves are very helpful.  Plant Bougainvillea ‘San Diego Red’ where an impressive show of intense color is desired, and it has room to be big and bold.
