A Bit More

Known across the Southwest for its cheery winter blooms, Caesalpinia cacalaco is a valuable plant for providing color when many others are dormant. Bright yellow panicles sit atop the broad canopy of this small tree/large shrub. Growing to 15-20’ tall and wide, this tree is suitable for patios or small gardens. Caution should be exercised, however, as branches and trunk are covered in large thorns. In its native Mexico, Cascalote is used in tanning. Like all fabaceae, this tree/shrub bears pods that appear bright-green and turn red-brown over time. Plant this fast-growing plant in full sun and well-draining soil, and prune regularly to ensure desired shape and form. Caesalpinia cacalaco is a great addition to desert, rock and low-water gardens.
