A Bit More

Resistant to deer, wind and salt spray, Pacific Reed Grass is especially useful in a seaside garden. A coastal bunch grass ranging from California all the way to Alaska, Calamagrostis nutkaensis is found in sand dunes, bluffs, wetlands and woodlands. Wide, green leaves form thick, upright clumps that age to gold. Growing to 3’ tall and wide, though some have reported seeing established clusters over 4’ tall. Thin stalks for flowers rise 2-3’ above the foliage. Drought tolerant, plant in full sun to partial shade and provide regular to occasional water. Use in grasslands or rock gardens and plant for dramatic effect in masses or as border accents.
