A Bit More

Carex pansa, also called ‘California Meadow Sedge’ is possibly the best grass-like alternative lawn available. Dark green leaves are moderately tolerant of foot traffic, and are perfect between pavers and stepping stones. California Meadow Sedge creates a swirling and undulating texture with its soft blades, and only needs trimming two or three times a year. In the wild, Carex pansa grows in primarily sandy soil, but it will grow nicely in a variety of soil types, only spreading more slowly in heavy soils. Consistently boggy or wet soils are not recommended; Meadow Sedge is drought resistant, and does need to dry out every now and then. Plant Carex pansa where a hardy and natural looking turf alternative is desired.
