A Bit More

Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ is a highly adaptable, deciduous tree known for its dense, columnar habit when young. Excurrent growth habit (has a prominent central leader). It is an excellent choice for privacy screens due to dense summer foliage and marcescence (holds dry, brown leaves in winter). Responds exceptionally well to heavy shearing for formal, tall hedges. It provides dense shade when limbed up. Non-invasive roots allow the tree to be planted close to sidewalks and buildings, but it will need maintenance to keep a narrow shape. Excellent windbreak. It requires regular watering while establishing, but develops moderate drought resistance. Tolerates a wide range of soils including heavy clays and loams; prefers fertile, slightly acidic, and well-drained conditions. Tolerant of urban pollution and moderate salt tolerance. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Moderate fire-resistant. Resistant to Verticillium wilt. Cold hardy to -30°F.
