A Bit More

Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’ is a narrow, columnar, deciduous tree. As opposed to Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’, Frans Fontaine holds its fastigiate form as it ages. It is an excellent choice for privacy screens due to dense summer foliage and marcescence (holds dry, brown leaves in winter). Responds exceptionally well to heavy shearing for formal, tall hedges. Non-invasive roots allow it to be planted as a street tree close to sidewalks and buildings. Excellent windbreak. It requires regular watering while establishing, but develops moderate drought resistance. Tolerates a wide range of soils including heavy clays and loams; prefers fertile, slightly acidic, and well-drained conditions. Tolerant of urban pollution and moderate salt tolerance. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Moderate fire-resistant. Resistant to Verticillium wilt. Cold hardy to -30°F.
