A Bit More

Cercis occidentalis is a multi-trunk or standard, deciduous, small tree featuring spring magenta-pink flowers, heart-shaped foliage with fall color in shades of gold, orange, and red. Excellent as a small, standalone specimen. Can be planted closely or allowed to branch low to function as an informal, colorful privacy hedge. It can be positioned near hardscapes because its non-invasive roots will not lift sidewalks, pavers, or patio foundations. Excellent as an understory tree for native oaks. Full sun to partial shade. It is highly adaptable to clay, loam, or sand soils. Tolerates both acidic and alkaline/lime soils (pH 5.5 to 8.0). Moderate to low water use once established. Occasional summer irrigation promotes faster growth. It needs good drainage. Deer-resistant. Fire-resistant. Cold hardy to 10°F.
