A Bit More

Cercocarpus montanus is a shrub or small tree native to western North America. It has an upright to spreading, multi-branched habit. The most prominent and striking appearance feature is its silvery, feathery, corkscrew-like seed tails (fruits) that cover the plant in late summer and fall. Excellent for privacy hedges, windbreak, massed plantings, revegetation of native spaces, and bank/slope stabilization. It prefers well-drained, sandy, rocky, clay, and shallow soils. Very low water use; highly drought-resistant once established. Best in full sun. While it can tolerate partial shade, its performance drops significantly without direct sunlight. Tolerant of coastal salinity. Very high disease and insect resistance. Resistant to Verticillium wilt. Not fire-resistant, but readily resprouts after burning back. Cold hardy to -20°F.
