Cocos plumosa is a upright, single-trunk palm with a high canopy of gracefully arching, feather fronds. It produces fleshy yellow-to-orange drupes that are edible. Needs to be fed with specialized palm fertilizer. Palms need to be pruned carefully and correctly, only removing dead or hazardous fronds. Uses include as focal points, privacy screens, street trees, around pools and patios due to non-invasive root system. Does well in seacoast landscapes. Best in full sun, but shade tolerant. It prefers slightly acidic, deep, well-draining soil. Grows poorly in alkaline soils. Moderate water needs, best with regular deep watering. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Resistant to Verticillium wilt. Cold hardy to 25°F. Current name is Syagrus romanzoffiana, but Cocos plumosa is still in common use.
