A Bit More

Cupressocyparis leylandii is a fast-growing conifer featuring fragrant evergreen foliage in flattened sprays. It is excurrent (single central leader) and has an upright, and typically columnar to broadly pyramidal habit. It has several cultivars more compact or have lime-green to yellow foliage. Natural hybrid of Monterey cypress and Nootka cypress. It is almost entirely sterile and does not produce viable seeds or nuts. Adaptable to acidic, alkaline, clay, or sandy soils, but thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Salt spray tolerance is high, making it a good choice for seacoast landscapes. Uses include privacy screens, formal hedges, windbreaks, sound barriers. Best in full sun but grows successfully under some light, high canopy shade. Moderate to high water use. Requires consistent moisture, though it exhibits some drought resistance once established. It is adaptable to acidic, alkaline, clay, or sandy soils, but thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Cold hardy to -20°F.
