A Bit More

Dasylirion wheeleri is a slow-growing, long-lived, desert succulent featuring s symmetrical globe-like rosette of silvery blue-green foliage. The leaves have sharp, serrated margins that can catch clothes and skin. There are separate male and female plants (dioecious) and the male has creamy-white flowers and the female has flowers tinted greenish or purple-pink. Flowers appear on 10-15′ summer flower spikes that arise every few years. Uses include architectural accent, security barrier, erosion control, container. Very low water use. Requires supplemental irrigation during its first 1 to 2 summers, but is extremely drought-tolerant once established. It is best in well-drained, gritty, or rocky soils. Heavy clay and overwatering will lead to root and crown rot. Prefers full sun for best form and color. Does not do well in dark shade though it can tolerate partial shade. Fire-resistant. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Resistant to Verticillium wilt. Cold hardy to 0°F.
