A Bit More

A bunchgrass hailing from the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, Festuca mairei has become a popular grass in drought-tolerant meadows. Growing 2-3’ tall and wide, this large fescue has sweeping, grey-green foliage that is evergreen in milder climates. During the summer, fine inflorescences rise up above the foliage.  Plant in full sun or part shade and provide low water after establishment. Cold hardy to below 0° F, Festuca mairei need not be cut back in the winter—simply rake it from the base of the clumps to remove old growth. Use Festuca mairei as a large scale groundcover, as a (tall) lawn substitute, and for erosion control.
