A Bit More

A cool season native grass that can be found in “no-mow” mixes, Festuca rubra ‘Molate’ is an excellent lawn substitute in Mediterranean climates. Growing 1’ tall and wide, it ‘creeps’ and spreads by rhizomes. Originally discovered in the Bay Area on Point Molate, Creeping red fescue prefers a coastal climate. Plant in full sun near the coast and in part shade in hotter, inland areas. Deer resistant and drought tolerant once established, ‘Molate’ is cold hardy to below 0° F.
