Galvezia speciosa ‘Firecracker’ is an evergreen shrub with a dense, compact, mounding habit and featuring pale to medium green, slightly tomentose leaves and stems and deep red, snapdragon-like, tubular flowers. Uses include erosion control, low hedge, border, container, dry shade under oaks. Excellent in seacoast landscapes. Highly shade-tolerant. It thrives in full sun to partial shade along the coast, but requires partial shade to full shade in hot inland locations. It is adaptable to soil types; thrives in rocky slopes, sandy banks, loam, and even handles heavy clay soils provided there is reasonable drainage. Low to very low water use. No water needed near the coast once established but preforms better with an occasional deep soak once or twice a month inland. Fire-retardant. Deer-resistant. Cold hardy to 20°F.
