A Bit More

Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Shademaster® is a deciduous, shade tree with a with broad-spreading branches and a decurrent, upright, vase-shaped habit. It features small, greenish-yellow or greenish-white flowers and pinnately or bipinnately compound fern-like leaves that are emerald-green in summer and golden-yellow in fall. Gets fall color and drops it leaves earlier than most trees. Its root system is generally considered non-invasive. Small leaflets make for easy landscape cleanup. Uses include street tree, specimen. Works well in intermountain and desert landscapes. Filters harsh sunlight into a light, shifting shade. This allows grass, turf, and shade-loving perennials to grow directly beneath it without dying from a lack of light. It has medium to low water needs; highly drought tolerant once established, though it appreciates regular supplemental watering during prolonged dry heatwaves. Highly adaptable to various soils. It grows well in moist but well-drained chalk, clay, loam, or sandy soils. Performs best in full sun. It is shade intolerant. Deer and rabbit-resistance. Resistant to Verticillium Wilt. Cold hardy to -30°F.
