A Bit More

Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei ‘Zuni’ is a deciduous tree/shrub with a decurrent, upright, spreading, rounded habit and featuring foliage with a reddish-bronze tint in spring, that matures to a deep green in summer, and changes to a orange-red to maroon-purple in the fall. Summer flowers are medium lavender to dark violet-purple and exfoliating gray bark peels away to reveal tan-gray inner bark. Dead-heading or pruning spent flowers will usually produce a new round of flowering. Often grown as a standard and a multi-trunk tree/shrub. It is considered a semi-dwarf variety. Non-invasive roots. Uses include as a focal point, screen, hedge, mixed shrub borders. Excellent in desert landscapes. Tolerates urban heat and pollution. Specifically developed for mildew resistance. Needs and thrives in full sun and is very shade-intolerant. It adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils (loamy, sandy, clay) but prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Apply regular water during installation and acclimating and it is drought tolerant once established. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Resistant to Verticillium wilt. Fire-resistant. Cold hardy to -10°F.
