A Bit More

Lavatera maritima ‘Bicolor’ is a broadleaf, evergreen shrub with an upright, mounding habit and featuring gray-green, velvety, palmately lobed leaves and flowers with lavender-pink or purplish-white petals with a deep magenta/purple center and radiating violet veins. Evergreen in mild climates, it can be semi-evergreen or deciduous in cold climates. It is very fast growing. Uses include screens and hedges, background plant, focal point, erosion control. Tolerant of urban conditions. Excellent for seacoast landscapes. Tolerates desert conditions with occasional deep irrigation. Thrives in full sun but can tolerate very light partial shade. It is not shade tolerant. It is highly adaptable to chalk, loam, sand, or light clay, provided the soil is well-drained. It is intolerant of waterlogging. Prefers regular irrigation to establish but becomes highly drought resistant once mature. Overwatering shortens its lifespan. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Cold hardy to 20°F.
