Leucadendron ‘Ebony’ is a broadleaf, evergreen shrub with a compact, shrubby, mounded habit and features deep blackish-purple to near-black foliage and flowers that are minute, off-white and yellow and nested inside very showy, burgundy-red floral bracts that mimic large flowers. The species is dioecious and Ebony is a female plant. It has non-invasive roots but they are very sensitive to disturbance and care should be taken digging or cultivating near the rootball. Uses include as a focal point and accent plant, low hedge, low border screen, container, mass plantings. Excellent in seacoast landscapes. It requires regular irrigation when installed and acclimating; becomes highly drought resistant with infrequent, deep watering once established. Prefers sharply drained, gritty, sandy, or loamy soils that are low in nutrients. It is is tolerant of some clay and slight alkalinity. Similar to many Australian natives, it is highly sensitive to phosphorus; avoid fertilizers containing phosphorus. It requires full sun to thrive and to develop its dark, near-black leaf pigmentation. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Fire-resistant. Cold hardy to 20°F.
