Leucadendron ‘Jester’ is an evergreen, broadleaf shrub with a upright, multi-stemmed, compact habit and featuring narrow leaves that have a variegated pattern of green, cream, and bright pink. The pink and red flushes intensify during the cooler fall and winter months. Cone-like flowers are produced at the tips of the branches and are surrounded by red to purple bracts. It has non-invasive roots but they are very sensitive to disturbance and care should be taken digging or cultivating near the rootball. It is also highly sensitive to phosphorus fertilizers and could be killed. Uses include accents, informal hedges and screens, containers. Excellent in seacoast landscapes. Medium water needs when installed and acclimating; low to infrequent water needs once established. Highly drought tolerant. It requires sharply well-draining, sandy, gravelly, or loamy soil. Prefers acidic soil. Best in full sun; intolerant of deep shade which makes the foliage colors fade and reduces bract production. Deer-resistant. Cold hardy to 20°F.
