Leucadendron ‘Safari Sunset’ is an evergreen, broadleaf shrub with a upright, rounded, dense, vase-shaped habit and featuring narrow, leathery olive-green leaves that flush into deep crimson, burgundy, and wine-red during the cooler fall and winter months. Cone-like flowers are produced at the tips of the branches and are surrounded by burgundy-red to creamy-yellow bracts. It has non-invasive roots but they are very sensitive to disturbance and care should be taken digging or cultivating near the rootball. It is also highly sensitive to phosphorus fertilizers and could be killed. Uses include accents, informal hedges and screens, containers. Excellent in seacoast landscapes. Medium water needs when installed and acclimating; low to infrequent water needs once established. Highly drought tolerant. It requires sharply well-draining, sandy, gravelly, or loamy soil, but can tolerate heavier clay soils. Prefers acidic soil, but can tolerate alkaline conditions. Best in full sun; intolerant of deep shade which makes the foliage colors fade and reduces bract production. Deer-resistant. Cold hardy to 25°F.
