A Bit More

Ligustrum lucidum is a broadleaf, evergreen shrub/standard tree with a dense, rounded, vase-shaped habit and featuring glossy, leathery, dark-green opposite leaves and creamy white flowers in large, erect, terminal panicles. Flowers are very fragrant. It produces numerous, toxic, small, oval blue-black or purplish drupes that persist through winter. Uses include hedges, screens, topiary, street trees. Excellent in desert, seacoast and urban landscapes. Check for approval to use in California. Medium water use when installed and acclimating; highly drought resistant once established. It thrives in almost any soil type (sand, loam, clay, acidic, or highly alkaline) as long as it is well-drained. Best in full sun but is highly shade tolerant. Deer-resistant. Cold hardy to 5°F.
