A Bit More

Macfadyena unguis-cati is an evergreen/semi-evergreen vine with a climbing, vining, spreading habit and featuring bright-yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. It is a very vigorous, rapid growing vine with an aggressive root system. Evergreen in mild climates, semi-evergreen to deciduous in cold climates. It is self-adhereing when climbing, claw-like tendrils grab onto surfaces. Uses include wall and fence coverings, groundcovers, erosion control. When used as a groundcover, it can cover an area quickly and with dense foliage that can smother a landscape. Excellent in desert landscapes. Tolerant of urban conditions. It has moderate water use when installed and acclimating; very drought-tolerant when established. Highly adaptable to soil conditions. Thrives in a wide array of soil textures including loam, sand, clay, and rocky or gravelly soils. Best flowering is in fertile, organic-rich loam. Requires good drainage. Thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is exceptionally shade-tolerant; can grow in dense forest understory shade until it crawls up trees to reach full sunlight. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Cold hardy to 10°F.
