A Bit More

A native to the Channel Islands off the California coast, the Catalina Cherry is a nice medium-sized shrub/tree that has a narrow habit. In the spring, white flowers appear before producing black cherries. But don’t count on a cherry crop – while the fruit is edible, the seed size makes it suitable for birds. Named after California’s first State Forester, William Lyon, Prunus ilicifolia lyonii is summer dry/drought tolerant and tolerant of coastal and seaside conditions. Cold hardy to 20° F, Catalina Cherry grows 15-20’ tall and wide and makes a good screen plant.
