A Bit More

A popular hedge in parks and home landscapes, Prunus laurocerasus or the English Laurel stands 15’-30’ tall (or taller over time) and as wide. With a dense growth of large, glossy leaves of medium green, this shrub/tree casts dense shade and is often pruned or sheared. Not to be confused with a true laurel (Laurus nobilis), the English laurel is not edible—its leaves, twigs and berries are poisonous. A native to southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, the English Laurel is cold hardy to -5° F and is also tolerant of shade and drought. Clusters of fragrant white flowers bloom in spring.
