Sarcococca ‘Fragrant Mountain’ is a lovely choice for areas that call for a slower growing hedge, but perhaps need a little more seasonal interest than your typical buxus hedge. The glossy little leaves look best in an understory garden or otherwise sheltered from direct sun, as they lose their luster if not protected. In the late winter and early spring, tiny bright white flowers adorn the branches, looking like a decorative fringe. The fragrance is slight on cool days, but in warmer weather their sweet, slightly spicy scent is a real treat. The nearly luminous little blooms give way to glossy black berries in the summer. The fruit isn’t edible, but it is quite attractive.
Sweetbox does best in a rich, moist soil, but well-established plants do have some drought tolerance, and deer tend to be uninterested in snacking on it.
