Another recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, Tulbaghia violacea ‘Silver Lace’ is a popular cultivar of the garden stalwart, Society Garlic. This low, clump-forming perrenial has narrow, green leaves with white margins that smell slightly of garlic when crushed. Beginning in Spring and through the Summer, delicate umbels of lavender-purple flowers bloom atop 20” wands. Native to grasslands and riparian areas of southern Africa, Tulbaghia’s tuberous roots desire regular water and can even tolerate shallow, standing water. Once established, however, Tulbaghia can withstand sustained periods of drought. Use caution when specifying this in a landscape, as some find the smell of this plant intolerable.
