A Bit More

The Spanish Dagger is one of the larger yucca plants and is native to the Southwest deserts and mountains. It can grow in elevations from sea level to 8,000 ft. above sea level and in temperatures as low as 10 degrees F. The sharp terminal spikes on its leaves keep most people and animals away, but birds and butterflies are attracted to its flowers. Native Americans have used the fibrous monocot leaves for cordage, rope, and cloth. They also use this yucca to treat headaches, arthritis, rheumatism, and bleeding. The fruits and flowers are edible raw or roasted. Soap can be made from the roots. Yucca schidigera is used in many dog foods to reduce the odor in their waste.
