A Bit More

Nicknamed ‘Our Lord’s Candle’ for good reason, this iconic desert cactus shoots up a tall, white-flower stalk when it reaches maturity, usually in five to ten years (a mythical sight when properly framed). The flowers are pollinated by the California yucca moth, and once pollinated, the plant will die, but the 10-15 foot flower stalk will stay standing for many more years. Before it blooms, enjoy this yucca’s blue-green sabers in hedges or as conversation pieces in dry gardens. The leaves have sharp pointed tips and they are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, so keep these plants out of the reach of your pets.
